CBD is experiencing a resurgence in popularity due to its diverse applications. But many people are still scratching their heads over what it does. So we’re taking time today to overview this compound, its potential health benefits, and why dogs might want a taste too.

CBD stands for cannabidiol and is one of more than 100 compounds in the cannabis plant. Cannabidiol may also be called “hemp oil,” derived from hemp plants. Unlike marijuana, hemp does not produce the “high” commonly associated with cannabis because it has a lower concentration of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. While both hemp and marijuana come from the cannabis family, CBD does not produce a “high” that may be associated with marijuana.

However, some pet owners worry they’ll run across the THC compound in their pet’s food. Unlike humans, dogs and cats are extremely sensitive to the effects of THC and are likely to get a harsh reaction if they eat it. Some argue that dogs will not adversely react to CBD because they do not have an ECS system to receive the medicinal benefits.

Most veterinarians suggest sticking to pure CBD oils and capsules when purchasing CBD products for your pet. These products do not contain THC, potentially making your dog sick. Of course, it’s always a good idea to consult your veterinarian before changing your pet’s supplement regimen.

Dogs may benefit from taking CBD for their medical conditions and anxiety. Dogs who have undergone surgery or other treatments should be given time before reintroducing CBD into their regimen.
