While there is an overarching “lament” feel running throughout, it may help to pick up the sections within the piece as separate “episodes of lament” and contrast them accordingly – and I feel that the composition has been “encoded” with interpretative clues for this to happen.

Another important thing to consider is that “Hika” is a lament in Japanese musical tradition from what I understand and so this piece in memory of Brouwer’s good friend, Toru Takemitsu, is really a sort of mournful elegy in his memory. This is a challenging piece, not necessarily because of the quick passages many of these are aided by the scordaturabut because of the difficulty of maintaining the appropriate feel throughout the various transitions.
