Having no prior experience with the Steampunk setting, this reader did not feel put off by the fantastical difference between this world and our own.

The whole book review is sound and fury, signifying nothing. This is an apocalyptic dystopia set in the past with some barely recognizable Steampunk elements. Years later the novel opens with an introduction to Briar Wilkes, a woman connected to the past Boneshaker incident.

Set up a giveaway. Priest’s language on the other hand feels completely right for the American Civil War setting and I found “Fiddlehead” and the other Clockwork Century stories to be completely immersive. Cherie Priest did a little okay, a lot of alteration to history for this book.

How is this novel an accurate or successful representation of the steampunk sub-genre? Priest, 34, is a well-spoken Capitol Hill resident whose idea of fun is a stroll in Seattle’s Lakeview Cemetery, gathering 19th-century names for her characters. The characters are never really developed – it’s more an actiony-adventure type story, which could be fine, except it seemed like it almost wanted to be a deeper, more thoughtful story at times, it just never quite managed to be so.

The rest of the world walled Seattle off and did their best to forget about it, except for two things: Boneshaker is being talked up by its fans with adjectives like ” stellar ” and ” terrific ,” but while it’s good, it’s not that good.

All material in Strange Horizons is copyrighted to the original authors and may not be reproduced without permission. Boenshaker I were a teenage boy still, I think I would have dug it. The book has nothing to say. If it is as plentiful as it seems there, why hasn’t it seeped out before?

A few highly recommended friends I dug the technological steampunk elements, and was more than willing to suspend my disbelief, but I wanted more of the steampunk social criticism to go along with the toys. The gorgeous cover art is provided by Jon Foster.
