The idea was interesting a take on the story of “Snow White” where her desirable trait isn’t beauty, but instead is her singing voicebut the execution was horrible. It could have been building and inspiring to the youth, whereas I’m afraid it ended up being lveine the opposite.

First of all, the two most prominent female characters are alike in that they find themselves unacceptable- like two sides of a coin, even their names are like each other.
This book is the second that I’ve read by Gail Carson Levine. A girl is gagged, tied up, and left in a dungeon cell, then threatened to be killed by a guard or eaten by ogres. The writing style has a nice, musical tone; when I was reading the book, it felt like a song.

Gail Carson Levine’s retellings are truly so amazing, and I’m so glad I read these as a kid. While her hair looks black to humans, it is the lovely color htun, a dark purplish color, to gnomes. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because there are some books I like more. The creativeness is pure genius.
I could really sympathize with Queen Ivi, but at the same time I hated her guts; which is an interesting combination. Return to Book Page. Her prodigious size and her odd coloring — milk-white skin, dragon tongue lips, and hair that seems to be frying-pan black — are greatly at variance with the land’s standards of beauty and often make her the target of stares and rude comments. Small things like this could be overlooked if she had some mental or personality characteristic I could identify with or get to like.
I liked Aza’s gift of illusing but I believed it could have been used in a much more interesting way than it was done.
However, unlike the original Snow White, who was herself a princess and the old queen’s daughter, Aza is a commoner, an innkeeper’s daughter who initially gets her position in the royal court by the queen’s own favor.

There is something so deeply satisfying about falling in love with a book and the I wanted to start this off with “Don’t judge a book by it’s cover”, because that really is the underlying theme of the book. At court, Aza meets the new Queen Ivi and fairesy life changes drastically when she is asked to be her Lady in Waiting.
Their whole culture and living situation fascinated me, and I’d say I finally really started enjoying the story around the time Aza view spoiler [ started living with them hide spoiler ] The reason I’ve taken off a star is because the pacing in gakl beginning of the story could have used some improvement.
Fairest takes place in the same world as Ella Enchanted, and has one or 2 characters from that book, which is excellent, because that book is one of my most favorites. Snow White is a story that doesn’t necessarily appeal to me. And how young Aza is The prince has ears that are too big and a saucy hound by the name of Oochoo. Soon, Ivi, directed by some mysterious advisor lets her power of being Queen go to her head, as she abuses her crown and takes away many Ayorthaian rights and privileges.
Apr 12, Mary rated it it was ok Shelves: But Levine paints the t I pulled this book off of the Young Adult shelves expecting some light fiction, but I really enjoyed some of the deeper meanings behind this story! This story has a bit of the Snow White story in it, but it had an undertone of evil that was really disturbing.
